Human Flourishing Workshop 3: Bridges of Connection – The Power of Interdependence and Compassion In-Person
Building on the foundation of awareness, this workshop focuses on the pillar of Connection. Join series facilitator Elenice DeSouza Oliveira and guest speaker Claudio Josuel Alejo, Assistant Director for Montclair's First-Generation Initiatives, to explore the power of interdependence and compassion in nurturing meaningful relationships and fostering among students a sense of belonging. Participants will engage in interactive sessions that encourage compassion-building and collaborative problem-solving, paving the way for a more connected and supportive academic environment.
Coffee and a light breakfast will be provided.

Claudio Josuel Alejo is a dynamic higher education professional from Jersey City, New Jersey of Afro-Latino descent. His focus includes the fraternity and sorority life, residence life, the first year student experience, first-generation college student experience being a first-generation college graduate, TRiO Scholar himself. Claudio Josuel is driven by the opportunity to educate, elevate and empower his students and colleagues through his pop culture programming and narrative storytelling. He uses his authentic leadership approach to connect with students and help them navigate their journey. Claudio Josuel holds a MA in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Higher Education from Montclair State University and BA in History from New Jersey City University. A Young, Strong and Proud brother of Psi Sigma Phi Multicultural Fraternity, Inc, initiated in Spring 2013 at the Baronet Beta chapter at NJCU, Claudio Josuel has held multiple positions from the undergraduate collegiate level, to regional and national. An Alum from the Ibrahim Leadership and Dialogue Middle East program, Claudio Josuel is a world traveler who has interacted with a broad spectrum of national leaders, grassroots activists, and social and economic entrepreneurs. He is a TedX speaker and an author of two memoirs on the Dominican and Puerto Rican diaspora, where he provides a necessary and important voice about Latine college student experience. Claudio Josuel currently serves as the Assistant Director for First Generation Initiatives at Montclair State University. During his free time, when he’s not jamming out to bachata, merengue, salsa and merengue, you can catch him spending time with friends and family, playing volleyball, enjoying a live jazz performance in the city or enjoying quality time with his baby niece.
Elenice DeSouza Oliveira, assistant professor, received a PhD from Rutgers University. She is a Brazilian native with a professional background in international research on crime and policing. Her past experience as a policy analyst for the Human Rights office for the local government in her hometown of Belo Horizonte, Brazil and her experience as an instructor at the police academy in the same city has influenced her research and enthusiasm to teach social justice. She teaches courses on Criminology, Policing, and Ethics & Justice. Prof. Oliveira most recent research activities have encompassed gang-related homicides, street drug markets, public transport crime and various forms of violence in urban settings such as shantytowns and low-income housing. She has published in creditable peer-reviewed academic journals including British Journal of Criminology, Crime Science Journal, and Crime & Delinquency journal. Prof. Oliveira research experience has influenced her teaching capabilities and broadened her view points in terms of exploring crime patterns and solutions as well as re-imagined justice.
