Summer 2023 Research and Writing Jumpstart In-Person / Online

We invite faculty and instructors of all ranks to a week-long program to jumpstart your research and writing for the summer, Tuesday, May 30-Friday, June 2, from 9-4. Participants may attend in person or online.

The week will begin with intention setting, and each day will feature morning and afternoon writing sessions, with a lunch-and-learn break featuring presentations on grant writing, scholarly profiles, and finding the right journal for your work.

Daily schedule: 9-11:30: Morning writing session
Noon-1: Lunch-and-learn (lunch will be provided for in-person attendees)

  • Tuesday: Grant Writing, with Maneesha Kelkar
    • Have a vague idea about a grant? Not sure how to start? At this session, Maneesha Kelkar will lead participants through a basic overview of grant writing, with particular attention to grants in the social justice field. Although individual grants and fields have their own requirements, Maneesha will draw on her experiences writing and reviewing grants to offer some more broadly applicable tips. Bring ideas you have for your own grant proposal or learn some ideas for future applications.

  • Wednesday: Creating a Scholarly Profile, with Siobhan McCarthy (Sprague Library)
    • How are scholarly profiles different from any other professional or social network, and how can maintaining one improve your visibility as a researcher, or help with job prospects as a graduate student? In this workshop, we will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of the various scholarly networks, including Research Gate, Google Scholar, ORCID, and Selected Works (Digital Commons).
  • Thursday: Finding Venues for Publication: Research Tools and Considerations, with Catherine Baird (Sprague Library)
    • In this mini-session, we'll talk about discovering journals, as well as considerations of quality, open access, predatory and peripheral publishers.
