Getting Started with Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: A Comprehensive Introduction Online

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) presents faculty the opportunity to engage in research projects that contribute to pedagogical knowledge and advance their academic careers. Yet, SoTL often feels daunting. Join the OFE for this special session with Heather Witcher (Auburn University at Montgomery)  to learn systematic approaches for identifying SoTL research questions that emerge from your teaching practice, including techniques for designing methodologically sound studies that investigate student learning, classroom interventions, and pedagogical innovations within ethical and institutional guidelines. The workshop covers practical methods for collecting and analyzing data in educational settings, strategies for connecting your findings to broader SoTL literature, and guidance on targeting appropriate publication venues. You'll leave with a plan for your first SoTL project and confidence in your ability to conduct rigorous pedagogical research that enhances both your teaching effectiveness and scholarly portfolio.

Heather Witcher is an Assistant Professor in the English and Philosophy Department at Auburn University at Montgomery. She received her MA and Ph.D. from Saint Louis University. As a writing coach for Defend, Publish, and Lead, Heather has guided many faculty to increased scholarly productivity and success.
